Terms of Use

Effective November 4, 2026

The agreement for using Penny Diary: the iPhone app, the web app and Penny Diary Pro. It is short on purpose.

The agreement

These terms are between you and Zhiheng Gan (“we”), which offers Penny Diary. By using Penny Diary you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy, which says how we handle your data. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Penny Diary.

The iPhone app

You get the iPhone app from the App Store. Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the standard EULA) applies to it, together with these terms. If the two disagree about the iPhone app, the standard EULA wins.

Recording, reading and exporting your ledger in the iPhone app is free and needs no account. Penny Diary Pro adds an account, sync across your devices, the web app and the other features the app marks as Pro.

Penny Diary Pro subscriptions

  • Penny Diary Pro is an auto-renewing subscription, monthly or yearly, bought in the iPhone app through the App Store. The app shows each plan’s price, and any free trial or introductory price you can have, before you buy.
  • Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
  • The subscription renews automatically unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple Account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
  • Manage or cancel it in your iPhone’s Settings, under your name, Subscriptions, or on Apple’s subscriptions page. Canceling stops the next renewal, and Pro lasts until the end of the period you paid for. A change between monthly and yearly takes effect at the next renewal.
  • Apple handles billing and refunds under its own terms. To ask for a refund, go to Apple’s Report a Problem.
  • Deleting the app or your Penny Diary account does not cancel the subscription.
  • A subscription gives Pro to one Penny Diary account: the first one that holds it.
  • When Pro ends, sync stops and the web app no longer shows your ledger. Your iPhone keeps the whole ledger, and the copy on our server is kept until Pro returns or you delete your account.

Your account

You need an account only for Penny Diary Pro, and you sign in with Apple or Google. Keep that account secure: you are responsible for what is done in your Penny Diary account. You must be at least 13, and old enough where you live to agree to these terms.

Your data

Your ledger is yours. You let us store, copy and show it only as needed to run Penny Diary for you: to sync it, show it on the web and keep it safe. You can export it at any time, and deleting your account deletes it.

Acceptable use

Don’t:

  • use Penny Diary to break the law;
  • try to get into another person’s account or data, or into our systems, without permission;
  • interfere with, overload or disrupt Penny Diary or the services it runs on;
  • reach our server by any means other than the Penny Diary apps, or reverse-engineer them, except where the law allows;
  • sell, rent or resell access to Penny Diary.

Not financial advice

Penny Diary records what you enter and adds it up. It does not connect to your bank, and it gives no financial, tax or legal advice. Check anything important against your bank’s records.

The service as it is

We work to keep Penny Diary running and your data safe, but we provide it “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, as far as the law allows. We don’t promise that it will always be available or free of errors, or that data can never be lost, so keep your own copy with CSV export. Features may change over time.

Limits on liability

As far as the law allows, Zhiheng Gan is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill, arising from your use of Penny Diary. Our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid for Penny Diary Pro in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, or your rights as a consumer.

Ending

You can stop at any time: cancel Penny Diary Pro in the App Store, and delete your account in the app or on the web. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or when the law requires it, and we will tell you when we can. If we stop offering Penny Diary Pro, we will give you reasonable notice first, so you can export your ledger.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We will post the new version here with a new effective date, and for a change that matters we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. If you keep using Penny Diary after that, you accept the new terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its rules on conflicts of law. Disputes go to the courts of the State of California, United States, unless the law where you live lets you bring them where you live. Nothing here takes away a protection that the consumer law of your country gives you.
